Available injectable medications
Ozempic (semaglutide 1mg) is also an injectable GLP-1 but is restricted for weight loss since October 2024. Saxenda (liraglutide) was discontinued in December 2025.
How do weight loss injections work?
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro mimic natural gut hormones (GLP-1, and GIP in Mounjaro's case) that regulate appetite and metabolism. They reduce hunger, slow digestion, and improve how your body processes food — resulting in you naturally eating less without feeling deprived.
The injection itself is a small subcutaneous injection (just under the skin) using a pre-filled pen. The needle is tiny — most patients report feeling almost nothing. It takes seconds, once per week.
Common injection sites
- Abdomen: Most popular. Avoid the area 5cm around your belly button.
- Front of thighs: Alternate between left and right.
- Upper arms: Less commonly used (harder to reach). Can be used with help.
Rotate injection sites each week to avoid skin irritation.

The injection experience
If you've never self-injected, the idea can be daunting. Here's what it's actually like: the pen is pre-filled (no drawing up medication), the needle is tiny (4–5mm), and the injection takes about 6–10 seconds. Most patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch — less painful than a blood test. After the first 2–3 injections, it becomes completely routine.
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro pens have hidden needles — you don't see the needle before or during injection, which helps with anxiety.
Storage requirements
Injectable weight loss medications must be stored in the fridge (2–8°C) before first use. After first use, Wegovy can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 28 days; Mounjaro for 21 days. Never freeze. If travelling, use an insulated bag with an ice pack. Your pharmacist or telehealth provider should advise on proper storage.
